Course Code/Name: Eng 114 Introduction to Academic English II
Course Credit: Non-Credit
Level: Undergraduate
Prerequisite: None
Type of the Course: Compulsory (for the students who fall short of the expected English proficiency level)
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course, the students should be able to
1) acquire selected vocabulary on academic and general subjects,
2) skim and scan to locate specific types of information,
3) be able to guess word meaning from context,
4) recognize main ideas,
5) have an intermediate understanding of word forms, their functions in sentences, and suffixes that indicate various word forms,
6) understand pronoun references, transitions, & time progression and their functions in an academic reading,
7) recognize main ideas in short audio listening tasks,
8) take brief notes on short audio listening tasks,
9) listen and understand general and specific information in a listening task,
10)express their personal opinions on a given topic and carry out tasks in small groups,
11) demonstrate understandable pronunciation,
12) write a cohesive paragraph related to the reading or listening topic,
13) rewrite the paragraph on the light of teacher’s feedback,
14) combine sentences with an appropriate adverbial affectively,
15) define persons or things with the correct use of adjective clauses,
16) differentiate between defining and non-defining adjective clauses,
17) use noun clauses correctly,
18) report the speeches and ideas back effectively,
19) tell the difference between gerund and infinitive structures and use them correctly.

Method of Instruction: Lecture; team/class discussions; communicative/meaningful language exercises; in- and out-of-class reading/writing tasks; presentations; library research; online research; workshops; role plays.
Length and period: 3 hrs a week, 42 hrs in total / one academic semester, 14 weeks in total

Attendance: Students are required to attend classes, practice sessions, and have examinations. Minimum required attendance is 70% for all class sessions per semester, which makes up 12 hours of absence at most. A student who does not fulfill the requirement for attendance is not allowed to take the final exam for the semester concerned and is to repeat the course. Students who miss an exam will not be given a make-up exam unless they submit an approved medical report or any other official document proving their excuse.
Code of Academic Conduct: Cheating during the exams or presenting someone else's work as yours (plagiarism) will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Disciplinary action will be taken against any student who violates the code of academic conduct.
Grading: - midterm exam: 35%
- active participation during the classes, attitude toward the course, preparation for the pre- assigned
chapters, assignments handed in due time: 15%
- final exam: 50%
* Students are required to submit assignments in due time. Late submissions without a valid excuse will be penalized.
